Orange Dream Smoothie
May 21, 2023Valentine’s Day Dinner at Home
February 21, 2024A Baileys Chocolate Espresso Martini is the perfect combination of a classic espresso martini and indulgent chocolate martini. Equal parts sweet and savory, it’s easy to mix up this restaurant-grade cocktail at home.
Baileys recently released a new chocolate flavored Irish cream liqueur, and as a fan of the brand you know I was immediately all over this new product. I thought what better way to test it than to create a delicious martini and let me tell you this liqueur did the heavy lifting for me. I call this a dessert cocktail as it is quite indulgent!
I ended up serving these delicious martinis at a little Galentine’s Day Party that I threw together. Together with the pink coquette decorations, Parisian desserts and appetizers, and girly bops oozing from the speaker, these martinis rounded out the vibes and immediately loosened everyone up as the party began. I garnished each martini glass with sugar sprinkles and heart shaped strawberries to complement the party décor and paired each drink with a little pink name tag for each guest. They were a huge hit!
Besides the delicious blend of liquor used to make this cocktail – which I will get into – my favorite ingredients for an espresso martini are honey and sea salt. It is common to add a little simple syrup to an espresso martini but there’s just something about a little squeeze of wildflower honey that does it for me, maybe it’s all in my head, but I think it’s better! I also like to add a pinch of sea salt to create that sweet and salty flavor contrast, almost like that of a chocolate covered pretzel!
Whatever the occasion, I guarantee you will enjoy this martini along with food and friends.
Everything You’ll Need to Make a Baileys Chocolate Espresso Martini
Here’s the ingredients you’ll need to make this indulgent cocktail.
- Vanilla Vodka: While any 80-proof vodka like Tito’s or Kirkland will work, a vanilla flavored vodka brings this cocktail to the next level. I personally love OYO Honey Vanilla Bean Vodka from Middle West Spirits, a local Columbus, Ohio distillery.
- Espresso/Coffee: A freshly brewed espresso is the peak ingredient for an espresso martini, however I am a lazy girl with a caffeine sensitivity and no espresso machine, so I typically opt to use regular coffee. I do enjoy using a nicer brand or flavor of coffee, for this recipe I have used a mocha blend.
- Baileys Chocolate Irish Cream Liqueur: The star of this cocktail is really the Baileys Chocolate Liqueur, however, if you don’t have Baileys Chocolate or can’t find it at your grocery store, any kind of Irish cream and some chocolate syrup would achieve the same delicious effect.
- Coffee Liqueur: Since I usually use coffee rather than espresso in this drink, coffee liqueur adds a nice coffee flavor and works in tandem with the Baileys Chocolate so that one does not outshine the other, creating the perfect balanced martini. I always use Kahlua, but I’m sure any coffee liqueur would be delicious!
- Honey: A little wildflower honey adds a touch of sweetness and adds to the overall flavor profile of this dessert cocktail. Simple syrup would also work in a pinch, or if you are looking to make your cocktail a little less sweet, you can skip this ingredient.
- Sea Salt: I like to add a pinch of sea salt to the mix to create a sweet and salty flavor contrast, almost like a chocolate covered pretzel!
- Sugar Sprinkles: Since I am following the dessert theme, I wanted to add a red pop of color with some sugar sprinkles on the edge of my glass, however this is where you can get creative with a garnish of your choosing!
- Strawberries: For Valentine’s Day, I sliced a few strawberries into the shape of a heart and strung them onto a cocktail pick to make a fun garnish. The strawberries pair very nicely with the chocolate flavored martini – but are not necessary. If you are more of a traditionalist, you could top your espresso martini with three espresso beans instead.
- Decorative Cocktail Picks: Again, not a necessary step, however I love to add a little flair to my cocktails by garnishing with a decorative cocktail pick or skewer of some sort. I find it an easy way to dress up my drinks when hosting and to bring a party theme into each and every element of the table.
How to Make a Baileys Chocolate Espresso Martini
- Prep Your Garnish: To prepare your garnish, cut a strawberry into the shape of the heart, then slice in half. Slide both strawberry halves onto your cocktail pick and set aside.
- Prep Your Glass: Run water around the rim of the martini glass, then rub the edge of the glass in a bowl of red sugar sprinkles. If you really want to go above and beyond you can also add ice to your glass while you mix up the cocktail or stick it in the fridge for a few minutes to get it nice and chilled before you pour your martini.
- Shake: Add ice, vanilla vodka, espresso (or coffee), Baileys Chocolate, Kahlua, honey and salt to a cocktail shaker. Cover and shake for 30 seconds.
- Strain, Garnish & Serve: Strain the martini into your prepared glass, then garnish with your strawberry cocktail pick and serve!
Serving A Crowd
If you’re planning to serve this cocktail for multiple people, I would recommend prepping your glasses and garnish ahead of time. In order to get that nice foam at the top of your chilled martini, these drinks are best served on the spot. To be as efficient as possible, I would recommend mixing them two at a time in your shaker.
Cocktail Tools
I was on the lookout for a very specific glass cocktail shaker with gold finish, and I finally found a gorgeous one at World Market. I also have a gold cocktail set from Target, which includes a jigger and strainer that came in handy to make this martini. Check out my full collection of recommended bar tools and glasses.
I hope you enjoy sipping on this indulgent cocktail while gossiping with your girlfriends or during a date night with your S.O.!
