Groovy Bachelorette Weekend in Louisville, KY
March 14, 2023An ice-cold blackberry mojito tastes like summer in a glass. It’s just like a classic mojito – white rum mixed with a little fresh mint and lime, but I like to throw some ripe blackberries in too. This drink is perfectly sweet and refreshing, and lovely to sip on during the warm summer months.
I experimented with this drink a while ago when I was visiting my parents at my childhood home during Memorial Day weekend. My family has a big pond with a built-in beach and brick patio, and it really is a small slice of heaven in the middle of the country. Sipping on a Blackberry Mojito while hanging out at our little beach was the perfect way to kick off the summer.
The key to a good mojito is a ton of fresh mint leaves and luckily, my mom has lots of fresh mint growing in her garden. The cool mint combined with tart blackberries and a little simple syrup to sweeten them is a stellar combination. I usually use Bacardi white rum for the base, but whichever white rum you prefer will work. And I like to top my mojito off with sparkling water like San Pellegrino or Perrier, but club soda also works well.
These drinks are great for a single-serve situation, but they can also be made in a pitcher if you want to serve them for a group – I have included instructions for how to make this cocktail both ways.
Everything You’ll Need to Make a Blackberry Mojito
Here’s everything you’re going to need to make a refreshing blackberry mojito at home:
- Blackberries: Fresh blackberries add delicious flavor to this tropical drink.
- Limes: A ripe lime or two is all you’ll need to add citrus to your drink. I prefer fresh lime juice to the pre-squeezed juice at the grocery store.
- Mint Leaves: Fresh mint is essential for a good mojito. I love to grow my own in the summer, but store bought always works great as well. In my opinion, the more mint, the better.
- Simple Syrup: Simple syrup is definitely necessary to sweeten up the tart blackberries and lime. I usually just use store bought, but you can also make your own or just use regular sugar.
- White Rum: Any 80-proof white rum will work for this drink. I usually go with Bacardi because it’s affordable and mixes well but go with whichever rum your prefer.
- Sparkling Water: I like to top off this drink with San Pellegrino or Perrier, but club soda would also work just fine.
How to Make a Blackberry Mojito
- Muddle: Add the blackberries, lime juice and simple syrup directly to your cocktail shaker and muddle. This is the best way to release all of the delicious flavors of the blackberries and mint leaves.
- Add Rum: Add a shot of rum to the cocktail shaker and shake for about 30 seconds.
- Top Off, Garnish & Serve: Strain the mixture into a glass filled with ice, then fill it to the top with sparkling water (or club soda). Garnish with a sprig of mint and serve!
Serving a Crowd
Alternatively, you could make a large batch of blackberry mojitos in a pitcher ahead of time. Just muddle the blackberries, lime juice and simple syrup directly in the pitcher, mix in the rum and then let it chill in the fridge until you’re ready to serve. Mix in the sparkling water right before serving, pour into individual glasses and enjoy! (I like to use a slotted spoon to keep muddled blackberries and mint from entering glass when pouring the cocktail).
Cocktail Tools
I added this black muddler to my Amazon wedding registry. It’s super affordable and works great! I also love this slotted spoon from Crate and Barrel, I got it as part of this larger utensil set for my kitchen. Check out my full collection of recommended bar tools and glasses.
