Gooseberry Burrata Salad
March 6, 2024Easter Tablescape Inspiration
March 29, 2024Perfect for warm and sunny days, this Skinny Margarita is a refreshing and low sugar take on the classic cocktail.
I have a confession – I recently discovered that I am becoming a tequila girlie. Although vodka will always have my heart, I have enjoyed drinking tequila-based beverages during a few recent nights out and have noticed that the following days I have not felt quite as bad as I expected. I have always heard that tequila is a cleaner liquor that’s easier on the body, and I think I am finding this to be true in my old age.
This recipe has been a long time coming and while it’s not as fancy as some of my other cocktail concoctions, a fresh skinny margarita is always a solid drink choice. This recipe is super simple and so refreshing!
Everything You’ll Need to Make a Skinny Margarita
Here’s everything I used to make this easy margarita.
- Tequila: You can use any tequila of your choosing for this margarita! I like to stick to blanco tequila and have found that I can really tell the difference between good quality tequila and lower shelf tequila in terms of flavor and the effects on my body. In this particular instance, I actually tried Lunazul Blanco Tequila for the first time.
- Lime: Fresh lime juice is a crucial ingredient in any margarita! Bottled lime juice works as well but doesn’t quite taste the same. I like to garnish with a slice of lime as well!
- Orange: Using fresh orange juice straight from the orange in place of triple sec or an orange liqueur helps to reduce the sugar in this margarita and makes it taste oh so fresh and delicious.
- Agave Nectar: Agave nectar adds just a touch of sweetness to this drink – you can add as little or as much as you like. If you don’t have agave nectar, a little simple syrup or regular sugar would work as well.
- Club Soda/Sparkling Water: Traditionally, club soda is used to top off a skinny marg, but I tend to prefer sparkling water like San Pellegrino or Perrier. Whatever you choose, the bubbles are essential for this drink!
- Margarita Salt: If you like a salty margarita then don’t forget to add some to the rim of your glass! If you prefer it without salt, then you can skip this step.
How to Make a Skinny Margarita
- Prep Your Glass: Run water around the rim of your margarita glass, then rub the edge of the glass in a bowl of margarita salt.
- Shake: Add ice, tequila, lime juice, orange juice and agave nectar to a cocktail shaker. Cover and shake for 30 seconds.
- Strain & Top Off: Strain the mixture into your glass filled with ice, then top if off with sparkling water.
- Garnish & Serve: Garnish with a lime wheel and serve! If you really want to take the presentation to the next level, try this tip: after squeezing the juice out of your halved lime, turn it inside out, float it on top of your drink and fill it with an extra shot of tequila. This is a fun party trick that always seems to be a crowd pleaser!
Serving A Crowd
If you would like to serve this margarita for multiple guests at a time, you can batch your tequila, lime juice, orange juice and agave nectar mixture and keep it in the fridge. When it’s time to serve your guests, simply divide it into glasses and top off with sparkling water before serving!
Cocktail Tools
I found my gold cocktail shaker at World Market – they have lots of chic options. I also have a gold bar tools set similar to this one from Target, which includes a jigger and strainer. Check out my full collection of recommended bar tools and glasses.
This simple margarita is best enjoyed on a warm afternoon while watching the sunset with friends or loved ones. I hope you enjoy this recipe! If you do, don’t forget to leave a comment or give it a rating to let me know how you liked it!
